Test #2 Information
General Information
**Monday, Nov. 7, 12:00-12:55 in the usual classroom.
**The test will begin promptly at 12:00 and end promptly at 12:55. If you
arrive late, you may still take the test, but you must turn it in at 12:55.
**Please bring your I-card to the exam.
**No notes or books may be used on the test.
**No calculators may be used on the test.
**The exam covers
Sections 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 12.5, 12.6 (skip Theorem on Linear
Approximation on page 895-896), 12.7(skip Matrix Form of the Chain Rule and
Proof of the Chain Rule on pages 904-905) , 12.8, 12.9(skip Problems that have
Two or More Constraints on pages 924-926)
Homework Assignments #6, 7, 8, 9
**There will be multiple proctors in the room and several slightly different
versions of the test to discourage any cheating. I very much hope it won't
be necessary, but if any cheating is detected, I will certainly follow through
on imposing the maximum penalties allowed by the university.
**A proctor may ask you to move your seat if it appears that you are copying or
that someone is copying from you.
What will the
test be like?
**If you know the material, you should be able to complete the test
comfortably in 50 minutes or less.
**The test will include some very basic questions, some medium-difficulty
problems, and one or two more challenging problems.
**The types of questions that may appear on the test include true/false, state
the definition, give an example, explain a concept, do a proof (similar to those
you've done for homework), calculational problems (similar to homework).
**Many of the problems will be quite similar to homework problems!
**You will need to show your work on the test.
**Problems will be written in such a way that a calculator is not needed.
True/False Study Guide
For each section of the book, there are true/false questions which cover
basic concepts from that section. These may be found on the CD-ROM which
came with your book. If you do not have the CD-ROM, I can email you
the questions and answers. I highly recommend doing these questions.
Skip any which are on material we did not cover.
Chapter 11 Review:
Definitions, Concepts, Results
This list of topics appears on page 938 of your book. You may be asked
to give some definitions on the test. You should skip #8
which we did not cover.
Concepts: Questions and Discussion
These questions appear in your book at the end of each section and are
excellent review of the theoretical material in this chapter. Skip any
which are on material we did not cover.
Chapter 11 Miscellaneous Problems
These appear at the end of the chapter, pages 847-849 and represent some of
the more challenging problems you may be asked to do. I suggest trying
#1, 2, 5, 8, 14, 15, 25, 30, 38, 39, 40, 41-50
Homework
One of the very best ways to study for the test is to rework your old
homework, especially problems that you missed or were unsure of. Try to do
them without looking at books or your notes - this is what you will be doing on
the test! Since you do not have answers to all of the problems, I
recommend trying some odd-numbered problems which are similar, so that you can
check your answers in the back of the book.
