Reserve Books
The following books are on reserve
at the Mathematics Library, in Altgeld Hall. They each offer a different
perspective on differential equations, and might help you learn the subject.
-
Walter A. Strauss, "Partial Differential Equations, An Introduction".
This book is the text for the course.
-
Stanley J. Farlow, "Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and
Engineers", 2nd ed.
A lovely and inexpensive book. Farlow is less
theoretical than Strauss, and he goes less deeply - but he is wonderfully
clear.
-
J. W. Brown and R. V. Churchill, "Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems",
6th ed.
A classic text. Particularly strong on separation of variables in
one, two and three dimensions. But not as good as Strauss
on the physical motivations of PDEs and the qualititative properties of their
solutions.
-
C. H. Edwards and D. E. Penney, "Differential Equations and Boundary Value
Problems: Computing and Modeling".
This book is the text for Math 285 Ordinary Differential Equations,
and is a
good basic reference for that subject. Chapter 9 covers the heat and wave
equations, at an introductory level.
-
R. Haberman, "Elementary Applied Partial Differential
Equations: with Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems".
This book is perhaps less insightful than Strauss's text, but is
more comprehensive. If you want to look up a solution formula for
equation X in region Y, then it's a good book to try.
