Math 553 Partial Differential Equations
Course Information
Class meets Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10-11am in 241 Altgeld Hall.
Exams
The Exams will include proofs of some important theorems, chosen from a
list to be distributed later.
Text: Robert McOwen, Partial Differential Equations: Methods
and Applications, second edition, Prentice Hall.
On reserve at the Mathematics Library. We cover most of Chapters 1-5. Click

Grading.
Your score for the class will be determined by:
- 40% - Homework (assigned weekly, but only the best 10 scores count)
- 15% - Midterm Exam
- 45% - Final Exam
No notes, books or electronic devices on the Test or Exam.
If you miss a Test or Exam, contact me immediately to explain why.
Vacation and leisure plans are never a valid excuse for failing to
complete required work on time.

How to Succeed
- Always re-work your lecture notes before the next class,
checking every step
and filling in missing details. (Allow 1.5 hours for this.)
- Read the text as you re-work your notes. This will help you get the big
picture.
- Ask me before each class about the points you didn't follow in the last
class.
PDEs do not yield their insights easily.
But work hard and regularly, and you will be rewarded.
