Hello, I am Stephen Maguire. This is a brief webpage with links you may find helpful that have aided me in my daily life at UIUC, information about me, and links to photos of some of my family.

My research interests are in the area of Geometric Invariant Theory, and in particular non-reductive groups.

Here are some books I like on Algebraic Geometry:

• Algebraic Geometry by Robin Hartshorne. A definitive text on the subject. As an algebraic geometer, I sometimes joke about this book being my bible.
• Algebraic Geometry 1,2,3 by Kenji Ueno. This is an easier text than Hartshorne's book to follow when first approaching the subject. Ueno's text has many examples, and does a thorough exposition of this beautiful subject. I have not read this book nearly as thoroughly as I read Hartshorne's book. However, when I was newly birthed into the world of algebraic geometry, I loved reading this book.

Here are some books I like on Invariant Theory:

• An Introduction to Invariants and Moduli by Shigeru Mukai. This book is a pleasure to read. I have intesely read chapters 4-6. My main problem with this book is that Mukai chose to work in characteristic 0. However, given the difficulties that arise working in positive characteristic, I am fairly understanding.
• Invariant Theory by John Fogarty. The only real complaint I have with this book is that it has not been LaTeXed, so it can be hard on the eyes. I have ambitions of contacting Professor Fogarty, if I pass my prelim, and asking him if I can LaTeX his book. However, the book is wonderful. He details invariant theory in a comprehensive fashion. The only catch is that he only works with affine schemes.
