| About Me I am originally from Utah, and I attended Brigham Young University as an undergraduate and as a master's student. In 2004 my wife and I moved to Urbana, Illinois, where currently I'm a fifth-year doctoral student in mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I expect to graduate in May, and then ... who knows? I'm right in the thick of applying for academic jobs in mathematics, so we'll see. Now for some random facts: I am married and have two daughters, ages 3 and almost 1. My wife and I met at BYU in one of the final classes of our math majors. (I hasten to add that this was not a marriage of geeks; she's much more well-rounded than I, as she minored in business and political science.) No, our daughters have not exhibited amazing mathematical ability thus far, though the older one can count pretty high and knows what an x is. I lived in Brazil for about two years (1999-2001) as a missionary for my church. In that time, I became fluent in Portuguese, though I'm sorry to say that that's slipping as time goes by. Still, I love the time I spent in Brazil, and I'd like to go back someday. My wife and I like to travel. I also enjoy reading, watching movies and TV online, planning elaborate celebrations for holidays, and learning and writing about my family history (right now, I'm researching the lives of some of my ancestors involved in the American Revolution and in the Mormon pioneer movement). I have a modest collection of movie scores (which is pretty stagnant, at this point--I don't buy soundtracks for movies I haven't seen, and as a graduate student I haven't found much time or money to see movies). I'm also a bit of a scrapbooker, but my scrapbooks are pretty much in the same state as my soundtrack collection. I play the piano. One of my current goals is to learn to play all the Gershwin songs I like, and someday before I die I want to be able to play Rhapsody in Blue. Finally, I love learning math, creating it, and teaching it. |
