Note that we have no particular day set aside to cover section 4.8 (the natural logarithm as an integral). There is no new material in this section of the text, and we will cover the relevant sections of it during other lectures and worksheets.
October 10, 2007: Tutoring available.
In case you're looking for additional help as you work on homework or study for the class, let me direct you to a few resources. The math department website has a tutoring services page, and on that page is information about tutoring for Math 220--it's offered (free of charge) every night Monday through Thursday, from 7 to 9 PM in 1 Illini Hall (the building on the southwest corner of Green and Wright). The tutoring services page also contains a list of other (not-so-free) tutoring options.
Another option is to look at the residence halls libraries tutoring system, described
here. It looks like tutoring is available every night from Sunday through Thursday.
And finally, keep in mind that you can and should always ask me questions. If coming early to class or staying afterwards does not fit your schedule, you should talk to me either face to face or by email and set up an appointment. I'm willing to meet with you, and I'm flexible on time and place, so keep that in mind.
October 25, 2007: Date of the fourth midterm
The fourth midterm is expected to take place on Tuesday, November 13. It will cover Chapter 4. More details will follow.

A collection of problems similar to Tuesday's midterm can be found here.

The worksheet we did in class today, together with the answer key, is available here.
October 15, 2007: The third midterm exam.
The in-class midterm covering Chapter 3 in the text will be held on Tuesday, October 23. Practice problems will be posted by Thursday, and a review session will be held next Monday.
October 3, 2007: Solutions for the practice problems
The solutions to the practice problems can be found here.
October 1, 2007: Practice problems for the second midterm
To help you study, I have pulled together 20 problems that are similar to what may appear on Friday's exam; they're found here. Answers to the problems will be posted on Wednesday.
September 25, 2007: Problem #21 on the homework due yesterday.
I have gone through and looked at each class member's answer to the infamous Problem 21 on the homework due yesterday. As you'll recall, MathZone was marking the correct answer as incorrect, due to a programming error. I have awarded an extra point to those class members whose answers were correct. If your score did not change from what you originally received, it is because there really was a problem with your answer. Please let me know if you have any questions.
In the future, if you think that MathZone is not accepting answers that really are correct, send me an e-mail as soon as possible with the text of the problem and your answer. I'll let you know if your answer is correct, and if it is, you should leave your answer in MathZone as it is. I'll go back after the assignments have all been turned in and award back the point you should have received.
September 25, 2007: "Handouts" page updated
I've posted a number of the worksheets (and one slideshow) we've had recently on the class handouts page (see the link above, or click here).
September 25, 2007: Meals in Allen Hall
For the rest of the foreseeable semester, I plan to be in the Allen Hall dining room for breakfast on Wednesdays, 8-8:40 AM, and for lunch on Fridays, 12-1 PM (with the exception of Friday, October 5). I'll be there to answer your questions about math, class, life, and the universe. Look for me there, and please stop by, if you'd like; that's what I'm there for.
September 24, 2007: Policy about MathZone freeze-ups
I've had a number of people email me within the past little while about issues logging on to MathZone.
I hope I'm pointing out the obvious here when I say that in cases like this, where the system has been known to freeze up, it's NOT a good idea to be doing the homework an hour or two before it's due. I've tried to give you a good 2 or 3 days on each assignment to get it done and all your questions asked. Because of that, and because of the lowest assignments I plan to drop at the end of the semester, I will not give you extra time because of a MathZone freeze-up, unless it's a particularly severe one.
So here's what we'll do. I had originally planned on dropping your lowest 5 homework assignments at the end of the semester. I will now plan on dropping your lowest ***SEVEN*** homework assignments. If you're having issues tonight and can't get them resolved, this way you won't be any worse off than you were before this assignment. In the future, though, everyone should be aware of the policy, which I'll state one more time:
No extra time or partial credit will be given for online homework not completed before the stated deadline, even if MathZone freezes up right before the deadline. It is your responsibility to work the homework soon enough to prevent deadline problems from happening.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
September 24, 2007: Date of the second midterm
Our next midterm (covering Chapter 2 in the text) will be held on Friday, October 5, 2007. The test will focus on Chapter 2, though of course some of the concepts from Chapters 0 or 1 may come out in some of the problems. A collection of practice problems will be distributed next week.
September 17, 2007: Working with MathZone
As you're working with MathZone, if you run into any technical problems at all, please call the tech support people right away. The number is 1-800-331-5094, and they'll pick up Monday through Friday, until 11 PM each night. When you talk to them, identify yourself as a UIUC student, and be prepared to describe what you were doing when you ran into a problem. Let me know, too, when you have problems, and whatever response you got from tech support, so that I can decide whether or not to modify the assignment.
September 13, 2007: Solutions to the practice exam
Solutions to the practice exam can be found here.
September 12, 2007: Practice exam
A collection of problems similar to ones on Friday's test can be found here.
September 11, 2007: Today's lecture
The slides from today's lecture can be found here.
September 10, 2007: Online homework
We will begin using McGraw-Hill's MathZone online homework system with the assignment for Section 1.5. Instructions for getting started can be found below; please register and get started on Section 1.5 as soon as possible. Section 1.5 will be due (submitted online) before 11 PM on Monday, 9/17.

September 10, 2007: Meals with the instructor!
In order to get to know you (and be available for questions even more this week), I'll be having lunch in the Allen Hall dining room every day this week from noon to 1 PM. You're very welcome to sit down and eat lunch with me, or just stop by to ask a few questions. Wait for me in the lobby at noon, if you'd like, or just find me in there. I will also be in the dining hall on Wednesday and Friday mornings from about 8 until 8:40 AM; stop by then, too, if you can.
September 4, 2007: Website changes
Note a couple of changes to the course website--I've moved old announcements and assignments to separate pages (see the links below), and I have created a page with links to course handouts (see the link above).
September 4, 2007: Exam 1
The first midterm exam will be given during class on Friday, September 14. It will cover the material in Chapters 0 and 1 contained in our course (everything but Sections 0.2, 1.6, and 1.7). More details about the test will be announced next week.
September 4, 2007: Online calculators
As I've announced, you're not required to have a calculator for this class. However, for today's lecture, things will be a lot clearer if you're able to visualize a function or crunch some numbers. What I suggest that you do today and in the future, if you don't have a graphing calculator, is use the one available online at
Other good function plotters and scientific calculators can be found online at the following places:
September 3, 2007: Coming soon...
The slides we saw in class on Friday, as well as the worksheet from Thursday, will be posted here soon. I'm currently working on grading your homework and quiz, and I expect to get some of that back to you tomorrow, with the rest of it hopefully by Wednesday. Tomorrow we will be working on computers and crunching some numbers; if you have a scientific or graphing calculator, please bring it!
August 29, 2007: Today's handout
The paper I passed out today--a list of all the trigonometry facts you'll be required to know from memory in this class--can be accessed here.
August 28, 2007: Today's class
The slides I used in our trigonometry review today are available here.
August 23, 2007: Calculators
I have added a section on calculators to the "Course information" section below.
August 21, 2007: ALEKS assessment
Don't forget to take the UIUC MAP (ALEKS) assessement and bring me a print-out of your results by September 5, as described in the course requirements above. Information on, and links to, the assessment can be found here.
