Complete list of past reading assignments, Spring 2008
- For Wednesday, January 16: Read with attention the paragraphs in Section 6.2 just before the boxed formulas on pages 515 and 518, and also read Remark 2.1 on page 516. Work through Examples 2.1 and 2.7. Skim, at least, the rest of the section. Work out Exercise 1 on a half-sheet of paper, and bring it to class to turn in.
- For Friday, January 18: Next time we'll cover the material on pages 521 to 525 of your text (note that this is only half of Section 6.3). Read with attention all the text of the section through Example 6.1. Make sense of Examples 3.4 and 3.6 (and read the paragraphs just before each one). Skim the rest of the material. Prepare the solution to Exercise 1 to turn in; make sure to show all your steps.
- For Wednesday, January 23: Next time we'll finish the material in Section 6.3. Carefully read all of the section beginning with the heading "Trigonometric substitution" on page 525. Make sure you understand the three examples. Prepare the solution to Exercise 17 to turn in; make sure to show all your steps.
- For Friday, January 25: Next time we'll have some more practice on all the topics covered in Sections 6.2 and 6.3. There's nothing new to be covered, so you won't turn anything in on Friday; just reread any material you found challenging, practice some problems on MathZone or in the book, and be ready for the quiz on Section 6.3!
- For Monday, January 28: We'll move on next time to Section 6.4. Read with attention all the text through Example 4.2, and Remark 4.1 on page 532. Also read the "Brief Summary of Integration Techniques" portion at the end of the section. Skim the rest of the section, and write up Exercise 1 to turn in next time. Show all your steps.
- For Wednesday, January 30: Reread the entire section, making sure you can work each of the examples. Write up exercise 17, showing all your steps, and bring it to class to turn in.
- For Friday, February 1: On Friday we will cover the first half or so of Section 6.6 on improper integrals. Read the section through the end of page 547, and the following items: Definition 6.1 and Examples 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4; and Definition 6.2 and Example 6.5. Read the section ``Improper Integrals with an Infinite Limit of Integration'' up through Example 6.7. Skim, at least, the rest of the section through Example 6.10, and prepare Exercise 1 to turn in on Friday.
- For Monday, February 4: On Monday we will finish Section 6.6 on improper integrals. Read all of pages 555 and 556 of your text (including Example 6.13) and the paragraph at the bottom of page 557. Skim the other examples of the comparison test, and reread any parts you'd like from the first half of the section. Prepare Exercise 39 to be turned in in class on Monday.
- For Wednesday, February 6: On Wednesday we will cover Section 7.1, the last material which will appear on the first midterm (which is next Monday). Read all of pages 566 through the end of Example 1.2 on page 569. Skim the other examples in the section. Prepare Exercises 1 and 9 to be turned in during class on Wednesday.
- For Friday, February 8: On Friday we will review for the first midterm, which will be given Monday. Come prepared to take a mock exam during the first hour, and ask questions during the second hour. For your preparation assignment, please turn in the completed class survey distributed in class. (Do NOT sign your survey; I will have you sign something else to record that you did it.)
- For Monday, February 18: On Monday we will begin our study of Section 8.2 in the text. Please read pages 626 through the end of Example 2.3 on page 629, and the two sentences immediately following the example. Then skim the rest of the section. For your preparation assignment, please turn in Exercise 26.
- For Friday, February 22: Next time we will learn about the integral test and the comparison tests in Section 8.3. The best way to learn about these tests is to see examples and work problems yourself. For that reason, the reading assignment will be a bit longer. Please skim the argument on pages 636 and 637, and then read Theorem 3.1 and Example 3.1, followed by the boxed statement on page 639. Read Theorem 3.3 on page 641 and the paragraph directly above and below it. Then read Examples 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7, and the paragraph after Example 3.7. Read Theorem 3.4 and Examples 3.8 and 3.9. Finally, work Problem 7 in three ways---once using the integral test, once by using the comparison test (comparing it to the harmonic series), and once more by using the limit comparison test (again using the harmonic series).
- For Monday, February 25: On Monday we will continue our discussion of the concepts of last Friday's worksheet. Please write up answers to Writing Exercises 1 and 4 at the end of Section 8.3.
- For Wednesday, February 27: We will be covering Section 8.4 on Wednesday. Please come to class having read from the beginning of the section up through the statement of Theorem 4.1 (the Alternating Series Test), as well as Examples 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4. Then read Theorem 4.2 and Example 4.5. Prepare Writing Exercise 4 and (regular) Exercise 1 to turn in during class.
- For Monday, March 3: We will be covering Section 8.5. Read Section 8.5 through Theorem 5.1, and read Example 5.3. Read the boxes containing the Ratio Test (page 658) and the Root Test (page 661), and read Examples 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, and 5.8. Prepare Exercise 11 to turn in.
- For Wednesday, March 5: Next time we'll review all the series convergence tests. There will be nothing to turn in for next time, but in order to be ready, you should complete all of the (non-bonus) problems on Monday's worksheet.
For Friday, March 7: Next time we'll have the mock exam for the second midterm. Come having studied as if it were the real thing, and bring any questions you have, for discussion during the second hour.
For Monday, March 10: On Monday we will have the second midterm exam. There will be no preparation assignment to turn in, but come prepared for the exam! If you have any questions over the weekend, drop me an e-mail or two (or three).
For Friday, March 14: There is a reading/preparation assignment due Friday, but what you'll turn in is not a book problem. Please see Worksheet #21 below to see what the assignment is.
