Friday, January 16: Welcome!
Welcome to the class website. Please browse around and familiarize
yourself with this page and the course pages linked to from it. This
page will contain announcements, assignments, and past worksheets and
solutions--it'll be an important place to visit often. (Please consider
bookmarking it.) As the semester progresses, if you have any
suggestions for improving the class or the webpages, please let me
know.
Wednesday, January 21: Compass
I will be using Illinois
Compass
for keeping track of your grades in both Math 231 and Math 199. Log in
there and click on "My Grades" to see homework, quiz, and exam scores,
and also weekly updates on your Merit grade. If you have any questions
or suggestions, please let me know. (Note: It may take a few days for
the class roster to be uploaded into our section, so don't panic if you
don't see this class listed for you in Compass right away.)
Friday, January 30: Monday's class and office
hours cancelled
Class and office hours will be cancelled on Monday, February 2, since I
will be out of town for the day. (We will discuss making up the missed
hour in class at some point.) The schedule has been modified
accordingly
above. In particular, note that we won't spend a day on Section 6.5,
and Section 7.1 will appear on the second
midterm instead of the first. If you have any questions or concerns,
please let me know.
Friday, January 30: Change to office hours
In order to have office hours that you can more easily make, I've
changed my office hours to Mondays 3-4 PM, Tuesdays 4-5 PM,
and Thursdays 4-5 PM. As always, if you need help but can't
make a regularly scheduled office hour, please send me or one of your
classmates an email. If that's not enough of a help, contact me, and
I'll be happy to set up an appointment with you.
Tuesday, February 10: Time and place for the
first mock exam
Our first mock exam will be held on Thursday, February 12, from 6-8 PM
in 141 Altgeld Hall (just up the hall from our classroom). Attendance
is optional, but students often find it helpful in knowing what to
expect for the actual midterm, which will be held Monday. I'll give the
mock exam out right at 6 PM and give you an hour to work on it by
yourself (as if it was the real exam, though during the real thing
you'll have two hours), and then we'll spend another hour going over
answers to the mock exam and answering any questions you have. See you
there!
