Summer 2008 MATH 347 Class Link


The textbook for MATH347 is Mathematical Thinking: Problem-Solving and Proofs (Second Edition) by John P. D'Angelo and Douglas B. West.

The Problem Solving and Proofs course meets in Altgeld Hall in room 241 from June 9, 2008 Monday to July 31, 2008 Thursday. The final exam for this class will be on Saturday August 2, 2008 1-3PM.

On Mondays to Fridays 10-10:50AM, you will meet with Dr. Paul M. Weichsel in Altgeld Hall room 241.
On Mondays 9-9:50AM, you will meet with me in the same building and the same room as Dr. Weichsel. Please come prepared with questions from the lectures, the text, past homework questions, or any other questions you may have about the course.

NOTE: Due to a higher demand, I will have my office hour/extra problem session on Wednesdays 11AM-1PM in Coble Hall in room B1.

Homework (20%):
Homework will be assigned almost on a daily basis. Go to Dr. Weichsel's class link for the assignments. Homework assigned on Monday and Tuesday will be collected on Wednesday (by the end of class, but extension will be given until 12PM at the latest), and homework assigned on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be collected on Monday (again by 12PM at the latest). Two lowest homework grades will be dropped.

NOTE: late homework will NOT be acceptable in any circumstances.


Exams (50%): You will be given less than 55-minutes on each exam. You may write on both the front and the back of each page but supplementary paper will be provided upon request. Calculators, books, notes, homework, etc are not allowed on the exam.
Exam I: June 24, 2008 Tuesday. It will cover the material from Chapters 1-4 (Dr. Weichsel will be more precise about this).
Exam II: July 15, 2008 Tuesday. It will cover the material from Chapter 4-8 (Dr. Weichsel will be more precise about this).
Exam III: July 30, 2008 Wednesday


Final Exam (30%): This is a two hour comprehensive exam.
August 2, 2008 Saturday 1-3PM


Academic Dishonesty:
The University of Illinois' Student Code Part 4 policy on Academic Integrity will be strictly adhered in this class. Any form of cheating on a class assignment or on an exam will not be tolerated and will be reported to Dr. Weichsel who will then take appropriate action involving the student's college unit and Student Discipline Committee.
