On the Unreasonable Effectiveness of Physics in Mathematics
Speaker: Arthur Jaffe (Landon T. Clay Professor of
Mathematics and Theoretical
Science,
Department of Physics and Mathematics, Harvard University)
Abstract: The intimate relations between physics and mathematics go back to the Greeks
and before. In 1960 physicist Eugene Wigner marveled at the "Unreasonable Effectiveness
of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences." Today the tables seem to have turned,
with ideas from physics providing effective
guideposts thorughout mathematics. We recount part of the story of this amazing evolution.

Thank you Dr. Fossum for your devotion to mathematics and happy 70th birthday. We wish you many more
years of all the best!
