You need to login to the course web page.
user name: your network ID
password:  your network ID (you need to change the password after your first login)

Textbook:  There is NO book.  You will need to purchase the CD  "Calculus & Mathematica".  CD works together with Mathematica, which is installed in labs and you may do your work there. So you do not need to buy the Mathematica software. However, if you wish to work away from the lab you need to purchase the Mathematica software: student version or lease a copy ($25 for one year) from CITES - see http://cm.math.uiuc.edu for a link to CITES.

Calculus & Mathematica format:  You will spend most of your class time  working in the computer lab, in a group with other student.  Rather than listening to a lecture, most days you will be working through the material found on your CD, using the software Mathematica.  This software facilitates  experimenting with mathematics and visualizing mathematics.  The instructor and the classroom assistant will be available to help you as you work through the material on the computer. However, there will be one lecture per week.

Class attendance:  Class attendance is very important, since you will gain so much from working with a group and consulting with the instructor and classroom assistant.

Exam dates:  There will be three hour exams during the semester and a final  exam.  These exams will be done with pencil and paper; calculators and Mathematica will not be used for the exams.
           Exam #1 - 29th Sept, Wed, location 241 Altgeld
            Exam #2 - 25th Oct, Mon, location 241 Altgeld
            Exam #3 - 3rd Dec, Fri, location 241 Altgeld
Final Exam - 16th December, Thursday, 8am-11am, location 2 Illini Hall

Group problem sets:  Problem sets from the Mathematica notebooks will be assigned approximately weekly. The list will be posted on the Classcomm website, and will consist of selected problems from the "GiveItATry" notebooks from each lesson. These are to be done in groups, using the  computer, and to be handed electronically. See the Lab Instructor in 239 Altgeld if you nees help turning in your homework. Late HW will be accepted with penalty 9% for each day and up to 3 days late only.  Points will be assign for clarity of your explanations as well as correctness of the sloution, so put Text cells explaining what you are doing. You can do much of the work during class, but you will need to do some work outside of class, too. Each group will submit only one notebook (put all names inside the notebook!!!), and each group member will receive the same score on the assignment. Be sure that all members of the group understand all the solutions! All members of the group will be expected to contribute equally to each problem. At the beginning of the semester, you will be assigned to a group, but later your group may change.

Literacy sheets:  Literacy sheets are paper and pencil assignments.  They will be assigned on the unit basis. They will be graded, and in addition there will a quiz based on the questions from literacy sheet.

Math 190:  If you have not taken it previously, you may register for  Math 190. It is a one hour course which gives you credit for learning Mathematica.  Your grade in Math 190, if you register for it, will be based on your group problem sets. The call number of Math190 is TBA.

Course grade: Mathematica notebooks (group homework) - 30%        Quizess & Literacy sheets - 12%
                       Exam 1 - 11%        Exam 2 - 12%        Exam 3 - 13%            Final Exam - 22%
Course grades will be assigned approximately as follows:
 90-100% A-, A or A+, 80-89% B-, B or B+, 70-79% C-, C or C+, 60-69% D or D+.
Important note:
Your course grade will be at most one letter grade higher  than your weighted average on the four exams.
