| Time/Location: | MW, 3:35 PM - 4:50 PM, PSC 002 TTh, 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM, PSC 002 (Note -- we meet 4 days per week, but for only half the semester!) |
| Instructor: | Bob Murphy |
| Office: | LeConte 400H |
| Office Hours: | MTWTh, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, or by appointment |

| WWW: | This course has its own web page. You can find it at http://www.math.sc.edu/~murphy/teaching/ |
| Prerequisite: | Qualification through placement |
| Attendance: | It is disruptive to come to class late or to leave early. On the rare occasion that you must be late, still come to class, but enter quietly. This course moves very quickly, and your grade will likely suffer if you skip any classes. |
| Text: | Fundamentals of Algebra and Trigonometry, 9th ed., by Swokowski and Cole
We will cover chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 (sections 1-5), 5, and 9 (sections 1-3) |
| Calculator: | For each test or quiz, I will give explicit instructions as to which problems you will be allowed the use of a calculator. If you do not own a graphing calculator, keep in mind that Math 122 now requires the purchase of a TI-83 or comparable calculator. I encourage you to work homework problems both without and with a calculator. You will have a deeper understanding if you can solve a problem in more than one way. |
Work Load: There will be daily reading and homework, quizzes about every other day, 3 tests, and 1 cumulative final exam. You should expect to work about 10-15 hours per week, outside of class.
Grading: No make-ups will be given for any part of this course. However, your lowest test score and your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped. All students must take the cumulative final exam and the final exam score cannot be dropped.
| Quizzes: | 20% | (these will be based on the daily homework assignments) |
| Test 1: | 25% | (Monday, Sept. 11) |
| Test 2: | 25% | (Monday, Sept. 25) |
| Test 3: | 25% | (Tuesday, Oct. 10) |
| Cumulative Final Exam: | 30% | (Thursday, Oct. 19) |
| TOTAL: | 100% (after lowest test score dropped) | |
Final Grade: (I will round off to the nearest whole number percentage)
| A | 90% - 100% |
|---|---|
| B+ | 87% - 89% |
| B | 80% - 86% |
| C+ | 77% - 79% |
| C | 70% - 76% |
| D+ | 67% - 69% |
| D | 60% - 66% |
| F | 0% - 59% |
Help is available: Working together on homework assignments is a great way to learn mathematics so I encourage this. You may also wish to use the Math Lab's free tutoring service. There are three locations: LeConte 101 Math Lab is open MTWTh from 11:00 AM - 5:30 PM, and F from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Towers Area Math Lab is open MTWTh from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Bates Area Math Lab is open MTWTh from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
