Rules for homework assignments
You may work together with other students on homework assignments, and indeed
I even encourage you to do so.
However, your final write-up of your homework assignment to be handed in must
be your own. More precisely, that means the following: when you prepare the
written version of your solution to hand in, you must do so without
assistance from another person, a book, or any notes. In other words, what you
write must come from your own brain, not relying on any other source.
The best way to guarantee this, if you are working with other people, is to:
- solve
the problems,
- write up the solutions using whatever assistance from other people or
from your notes you need, and then
-
make sure you understand those solutions;
then,
-
put away those solutions and, without assistance from those notes/solutions or
any other source,
- write from scratch your solutions that you will hand in.
This rule guarantees that you have actually learned and understood what you are
handing in!
I invite you to ask me (Professor Nevins)
for further clarification if you have any questions about
this rule.
