Textbook: David C. Lay, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 3rd edition, Addison-Wesley, Reading, MA, 2002.
There will be two mid-terms and a final exam. Tentative dates of mid-terms (subject to change):
More precise information on the dates of the mid-terms will be provided later. All mid-terms will be held during regular class time in 149 Henry Building.
Final exam: Monday, December 15, 7:00-10:00 pm, in 149 Henry Building.
Final exam review session: Saturday, December 13, 5:00-6:00 pm, in 243 Altgeld Hall.
Grading: The grade for the course will be based on the total points from the two mid-terms (the maximum score will be 100 in each mid-term), the final exam (maximum score 180), and on points from homework and quizzes (normalized to a maximum score of 120; the lowest homework score and the lowest quiz score will be dropped). Hence the maximum score will be 500 for the total points. Homework must be returned in class on the designated day. Dropping one homework and one quiz is intended to provide leeway for those times when a student is ill, or needs to go to a job interview, or has a family emergency, or just misses class for some other reason. If you miss a quiz or do not return homework in class at the proper time, you will get zero points for it. As this system allows you to miss one homework and one quiz without you giving any reason for it, no late homework will be accepted and no make-up quiz will be given. Exceptions will be considered only in the case of a prolonged illness indicated by a doctor's note. Of course, you are encouraged to do all homework, take all quizzes and do your best.
No books, notes or calculators will be allowed in the mid-terms and in the final exam. Bring your university ID to the tests and the final exam.
Homework and Quizzes: You are advised to do all suggested problems. These will not be graded, but they represent the minimum number you should try. In addition, there will be 4 sets of graded homework assignments and 5 quizzes that will affect your grade for the course. Graded homework is due in class at the beginning of the lecture specified for each assignment. Quizzes will be given on the Tuesday of each week when there is no mid-term or homework due, apart from a few exceptions. No late homework will be accepted and no make-up quizzes will be given. Graded homework and quizzes will be returned in class. Any graded homework or quiz not picked up by students within one week after it was made available will be destroyed.
