Math 501 - Spring 2008 - Syllabus

Instructor: Randy McCarthy, 324 Illini Hall, 244-7307, randy@math.uiuc.edu

Office Hour: Mon at 10-11; by appointment or stop in and I'll see you or tell you when I can. My door will be generally closed but this does not mean I don't want to talk to you.

Text: Officially, none, we have permission to use notes from Derek Robinson's Spring 2006 class as typed up by Rosona Eldred. We will be modifying these notes as the semester progresses.

Homework: We do not have a grader for this course. Thus, there will be graded homework roughly every other week. There will be additional ``recommended'' problems which will also be given. Homework will count for 20 percent of ones final grade.

Exams: There will be 2 exams during the semester and a final. At least 1/3 of the points on each midterm will come exactly from the homework and ``recommended'' problems and another 1/3 of the points from variations of these problems. Each midterm will count as 20% of the final grade (and will be one hour or 1.5 hour in length). The Final exam is Friday, May 2, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in our regularly scheduled classroom. It will count as 40% of the final grade. The final will consist of questions at the level of the algebra II comp exams given by the department. Grades are not curved but may be scaled.
