Course Description

The aim of this course is to understand the mathematical aspects or several modern, real-world problems. It involves mathematical modeling and problem solving techniques relating to voting systems,networks, circuits, critical paths, scheduling, game theory, symmetry and patterns. Prerequiste : Three years of high school mathematics including two years of algebra and one year of geometry.

Grading

Homeworks

Homework will be assigned every week. Homeworks will not be graded. However, the quizzes will have one question from the assigned homework. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you have difficulties with the homework or the class material.

Quizzes

There will be 9 quizzes in all and the 2 lowest scores will be dropped. Make up quizzes will be given only if an official document excusing your absence is turned in.


Assignment

There will be an assignment based on class work which you will have to turn in. Regular class attendance is expected.

Exams

There will be three one hour exams which are tentatively scheduled to be held on 27th September, 20th October and 17th November, 2004.
The final exam will be held on Monday, December 13th 2004 from 8:00 - 11:00 AM. The total grade for the semester will be assigned based on your score out of 300.
