Home Page for Math 213

This is the home page for Math 213, "Introduction to Discrete Mathematics", Section X1. This class meets for the Spring 2002 semester on MWF 12 in 145 Altgeld Hall.
The newsgroup for this course is now accessible from this webpage: uiuc.class.math213
My intention iss to provide, at the very least, an archive for all of the TeX-d handouts in the course and a guide to the semester, class-by-class.

Class Diary

M 1/14 -- Distribution of Class Organization , syllabus and problem solving guide. We covered section 1.4 and part of 1.5. First homework assignment:1.4 -- 5, 6, 11, 12; 1.5 -- 3, 4, 35, 36 (due W 1/16). Throughout the semester, only the even-numbered problems will be graded, because there are answers in the back for the odd ones. However, you are "responsible" for having done all of them.

W 1/16 -- We covered section 1.5 and part of 1.6, HW 1 returned and discussed. Second homework assignment:.4 -- 19, 22ad; 1.5 -- 15, 16, 17, 18; 1.6 -- 8, 9 (due F 1/18).

F 1/18 -- HW 2 returned and discussed; we covered 1.6 and part of 1.7. Third homework assignment:1.6 -- 6, 7, 16, 17, 24, 25; 1.7 -- 3, 4. (due W 1/25)

M 1/21 -- Martin Luther King's Birthday (campuswide holiday).

W 1/23 -- HW 3 returned and discussed; we covered 1.7 and part of 1.8. Fourth homework assignment: 1.7 -- 13, 14, 15bc, 16bc; 1.8 -- 1, 2, 5, 6. (due W 1/25)

F 1/25 -- HW 4 returned and discussed. More on big oh notation, and an introduction to mathemtical induction. There was no homework due for Monday.

M 1/28 -- First Bonus Notes distribued, on a couple of class examples not in the text and the "calculus" way to think about O(g(x)). More discussion of the notes and other induction examples. Fifth homework assignment: 1.8 -- 7ac, 8ac; 3.2 -- 5, 6, 12, 13, 20, 21.

W 1/30 -- HW 5 discussed. Second Bonus Notes distributed, on the growth of log x. Webegin counting problems in 4.1. Sixth homework assignment: 3.2 -- 28, 29 (do some numerical experimentation); 4.1 -- 3, 15, (4 & 14) (counts as one problem), 21, 22, 38, 39.

F 2/1 -- HW 6 discussed, but HW 5 not returned. Zoom through 4.2 and head to 4.3. Test 1 Looms. Seventh homework assignment: 4.1 -- 23, {24,26} (counts as one), 28, 29, 40, 47; 4.2 -- 13, 14.

M 2/4 -- HW 7 discussed; HW 5 and 6 returned. More from 4.3. Talk about the test. No evening time is feasible. Eighth homework assignment: 4.1 -- 44; 4.2 -- 16, 25; 4.3 -- 9, 15, 16, 18, 25.

W 2/6-- HW 8 discussed, HW 7 returned. Finish 4.3 and start 4.4. Ninth homework assignment: 4.3 -- {20, 38} (count as one), 30, 31, 39 4.4 -- 6, 8, 9, 11.

F 2/8 -- The instructor's enrollment in the UIUC "Faculty Early Senility" program led him to forget to give HW 8 to the grader on Friday, so we discuss HW9 with nothing returned. We finish 4.4, lots on poker hands, and start 4.6 gingerly. The class votes with its feet at 12:46. Tenth homework assignment: 4.3 -- 33, 40; 4.4 -- {14,16}, 13, 29, 30, 31; 4.6 -- 8, 9.

M 2/11 -- HW 8 and HW 9 will be returned, HW 10 will be discussed. More on 4.6. Review questions will be distributed.

W 2/13 -- Review for the test.
