4. Exams and Homework
There will be 4 in-class hourly exams and 4 sets of graded homework. The
exams will be given during the
Exercise classes on Thursdays. Also the graded homework will be
collected on Thursdays.
5. Final Exam
The final exam is on December 16, 8-11am.
6. Grades
Grades will be computed according to the following scheme:
| 4 hourly exams | 46% |
| 4 sets of homework | 24% |
| Final | 30% |
| Total | 100% |
7. Attendance
Attendance at the Exercise classes is compulsory and will be recorded. Students missing a
significant number of classes will be graded down.
8. Questions
If you have questions or problems, first try to resolve them with the instructor of your Exercise class.
9. Office Hours
Office hours for the Exercise classes are as follows:
AD1 Tues-Thur 12-1, B1 CH.
AD2 Tues-Thur 12-1, B1 CH.
AD3 Mon 3-5, Tues 4-5, 245 IH.
AD4 Fri 1-3, 346 IH.
AD5 Fri 1-3, 346 IH.
AD6 Mon 3-5, Tues 4-5, 245 IH.
You should only attend the office hours for your Exercise class.
10. Assigned Problems from the Book
Be sure to do all the assigned problems from the book. These will not be
graded, but you may be
asked about them during the Exercise classes. Remember, the assigned
problems represent the minimum number you should try. Finally, don't fall
behind in the course! It's hard to catch up.
11. Bulletin Board
8/28/06 The class website address is
www.math.uiuc.edu/~robinson/math231/math231.html
8/28/06 If you have questions, it is best to ask your TA during the exercise
class. There is very little time for me (DR) to answer questions after class.
8/28/06 Be sure that you attend the right exercise class; check the list of
times and classooms.
10/12/06 Mid-term grades are now available. These give an indication of
where you stand with 24% of grade earned.
10/19/06 Grading: If you have a question about grading, first try to resolve
it with your TA. If you still cannot agree, you can come to me (DR), and I'll
make the final decision. Course grades are computed first as percentages and
then letter grades are assigned on the basis of these.
10/23/06 Note for students in sections AD1 and AD2: Andrew Ledoan's office
and telephone number have changed.
12/5/06 The final exam. This is on Saturday December 16, 8-11 am. It will be
held in 100 Gregory Hall. It will cover the entire course, except for
conics and hyperbolic functions. The rules are: no books, no calculators, no
cell phones. To guard
against possible substitution, students should hand their exams personally
to their TA: no one else will accept it.
12/5/06 If you would like to have an estimate of your current grade position,
you should email me (DR).
12/8/06 Here are some suggestions for studying for the final exam.
1. Do all the problems on the review sheet; the final will be fairly
similar. Look at the solutions ONLY after you've tried the
problems for yourself.
2. List the standard integrals you have to remember. Also review each
of the methods of integration that we covered.
3. Review the formulas for arc length and surface area.
4. Make a list of all the tests for convergence, paying attention to
the rules about when they apply.
5. Remember the power series for exp(x), sin x, cos x.
6. Rework all the HW and exam problems. And of course work out as
many problems from the book as you can.
7. Review the basic trig identies.
12/13/06 Solutions to the Review Problems have now been posted.
12/13/06 Remember to set your alarms for Saturday. Best of luck everyone!
