Required text: For All Practical Purposes: Mathematical Literacy in Today's World, 6th ed., W. H. Freeman and Co.
This course serves as an introduction to selected areas of mathematics through applications to real-world problems. We will discuss ways of representing a situation using mathematics and understanding the methods that are used to solve these problems. You will learn by doing hands-on examples in class and in the homework. The goal is to develop analytic problem solving skills that you can apply in your everyday life.
It is important that you attend class to participate in discussions and work example problems. Therefore class attendance is required.
Homework is assigned on Fridays and collected the following Friday. Each student is expected to do the problems and write the solutions in his or her own words. Late homework will be accepted UNTIL class begins on the Monday after it is due, with a 10% penalty.
Homework assignments
At the end of class on Fridays, a short quiz will be given. These quizzes will give you a chance to try problems like those on the homework, and should help you prepare for taking the exams. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.
There will be three in-class exams:
Exam 1 review sheet
Exam 2 review sheet
Exam 3 review sheet
Final exam review guide
Sudoku puzzles
The final exam is Friday, December 16, 7:00 pm in 145 Altgeld Hall. See here for University policy regarding final exams.
