This course serves as an introduction to the basic ideas of logic, set theory, probability, vectors, and matrices. Applied problems are selected from the social sciences and business.
Classroom attendance is expected.
Homework problems will be assigned at the beginning of each lecture. These problems will help you become familiar with the material and prepare you for quizzes and tests. Problem sets will not be collected, but you are encouraged to attempt the problems each day.
A quiz will be given at the end of class every Friday. Makeup quizzes will be given only if you notify me before the quiz by email. You must present official documentation excusing your absence before you will be allowed to take a makeup quiz. The lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester.
There will be 3 exams given during the semester. Because these are common exams (each section of Math 124 takes the same exam), they will be given during the evening at 7 pm. The dates for the exams are September 20, October 18, and November 15.
If you have a conflict, you must present documentation stating that another UIUC exam or course is meeting during the scheduled exam times. You must provide this documentation at least 10 days prior to the exam date. The conflict exam will be offered at 5:30 pm on the same days listed above.
Because the exams are being offered at times other than when our class normally meets, we will not have class on the following dates: September 22, October 20, and November 17.
The final exam will be Tuesday, December 12, 8:00-11:00 am, in 145 Altgeld Hall. This time is set by University policy. See the Student Code for more information.
Grades for this course will be determined as follows:
No calculators will be allowed at any time during this course. Please do not bring them to class.
