Course Description:

This course shall be an introduction to linear algebra.The focus will be systems of linear equations, matrices and their inverses, determinants, and a glimpse of topics like vector spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Grading:

• Homeworks: Homeworks shall contribute towards 20 percent of the grade. No extensions will be allowed. To compensate for this rigid policy, the lowest homework score shall be dropped. It is expected that the solution to each homework problem is worked out in full detail, with proper justification to each intermediate conclusion or step. It is also expected that results/ theorems used from the book are provided reference by page numbers from the book. This will make grading easier and allow me to comment on solutions with more accuracy.
• Each homework will consist of 2 parts: Each week, roughly 4 problems will be assigned on Tuesday to be due on Thursday (Part 1) and roughly 12 problems will be assigned on Thursday to be due on Tuesday of the next week (Part 2)
• Midterms 1 (April 1) and 2 (April 22): 20 percent each. The midterms will be in-class, closed book, calculator free exams. The same instructions which are spelt out for solutions of homework problems, also apply to solutions of midterm problems.
• Midterm 1 will cover sections 1.1- 1.5, 1.7 and 2.1. The section 2.2 has been dropped because I could not complete the discussion on it in class
• Midterm 2 will cover sections 2.2-2.3, 3.1-3.3, 4.1-4.3
• Final: 40 percent.
