Checklist for Midterm Exam 1
General Instructions:
- 1st midterm will consist of 6-8 questions. To obtain the full credit,
not only the correct answer but the calculations leading to the answer
must be shown. For multiple choice questions, the detailed answer is not required unless
stated otherwise.
- Studying and practicing homework problems is important for the exam, but not
all questions on the exam are drawn from the homework. Questions can also be
based upon examples I or your TAs have covered in lectures and discussions.
- Theory is also important. You could be asked to answer simple questions about definitions and
describe concepts. For example, you could be asked what is the improper integral.
- No books, notes, calculators or other computer aid is permitted on the exam.
- A table with relevant identities and standard integrals will be provided.
MidTerm Exam 1 Content:

- Trigonometric techniques of integration: powers of trigonometric functions, trigonometric substitutions
- Integration of rational functions, partial fractions.
- Improper integrals: discontinuous integrand, infinite limit of integrations, comparison test
- Differential equations. Exponential growth and decay.
If you believe there has been a grading error on the exam, discuss it
first with your TA. If that doesn't settle the matter, then explain
the situation in writing and give it to me in class or in
my mailbox in 250 Altgeld. The deadline for all such requests is one week
after the exam has been returned. Note: this means one week after
your TA returned the exam, regardless of whether or not you were
in class to receive it on that day.
