Dear students enrolled in Math 220 for Spring 2009:
This e-mail is a reminder and expansion of the information in the Spring
2009 timetable.
If you wish to stay in Math 220 for the spring semester, you MUST pass
the ALEKS exam between August 21, 2008 and January 26, 2009 with a score
of at least 70%. Otherwise you will be automatically dropped from Math 220.
You are NOT exempt if
* you passed the ALEKS exam but did so before 8/21/08;
* you passed Math 115, Math 012, Math 014, or Math 016;
* you took precalculus or calculus in high school;
* you previously took Math 220; or
* you were previously told that you should enroll in Math 220.
You must still take ALEKS and pass with at least 70% by January 26, or
else you will be dropped from the class.
To take ALEKS, go to http://www.aleks.com/uiuc/math
There is a small fee ($3.50) to purchase an access code to take the exam
one time, because the exam is provided by an outside company. If you
are unsatisfied with your score and wish to retest, you may purchase as
many access codes as you like for as many retests as you want.
Alternatively, for $35 you may purchase the Prep for Calculus Learning
Module with unlimited retests and worked-out examples of the topics you
missed on the previous assessment. More information is available at
http://www.math.uiuc.edu/ALEKS.
If you previously tested through http://www.aleks.com/uiuc/math, you may log in
there and click Assessment to check your score and test date. If you
previously tested through IStart, you should login through
www.istart.uiuc.edu
and do the same thing to check your score and test date.
If you have general questions related to University of Illinois math
issues and ALEKS issues, please e-mail
advising@math.uiuc.edu for help.
If you have computer/tech support issues after logging in and starting
the test--or trying to start the test--please send detailed information
about what you did and exactly what problem occurs to
http://support.aleks.com.
If you haven't already earned 70% on ALEKS since August 21, 2008, we
recommend that you do the test as soon as possible so that you can
either relax and enjoy your winter break, or study up (via a Learning
Module or other help) to be able to pass the exam BEFORE the start of
the spring semester.
