Text: Linear Algebra with Applications by S. J. Leon (Prentice-Hall, 1998), Fifth Edition
Prerequisite:
The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the one of the most
useful fields of mathematics.
We emphasize computational techniques, but also present proofs of theorems.
This course will roughly follow the first six chapters of Leon's
text Linear Algebra with Applications.
But we
we leave out entirely Sections 1.5, 2.3, 5.7, 6.2, 6.7
and Chapter 7.
Due to lack of time we also omit almost all of the applications.

Chapter 4 Linear Transformations: 5 (Oct 3 - Oct 12)
Chapter 5 Orthogonality: 9 (Oct 19 - Nov 7)
Chapter 6 Eigenvalues: 8 (Nov 9, Nov 16, Nov 26 - Dec 7)
Exams and Leeway: 6 (Sept 10, 12, Oct 15, 17, Nov 12, 14) (Total: 43)
Exams: There are three 50 minute exams on September 12, October 17 and
November 14 (each is a Wednesday).
Exam #2 on October 17 (Wednesday)

Exam #3 on November 14 (Wednesday)
5:00-6:00 held in room 314 Altgeld Hall
On Nov 14 we had 2 classes (11 am and an evening exam).
So we have to cancel a lecture.
NO CLASS on December 7, Friday.
Final:
The final exam will be at 8-11 AM on Dec 14 (Friday).
Grading: 11 Quizes = 20% : 3 Hourly Exams = 45% ;
Final Exam = 35%
The weight of the first exam toward the course grade is 10%,
second exam: 15%, third: 20%.
Homeworks:
Only recommended homeworks are assigned.
But there will be
a quiz from it on each Wednesday.
(No quizes on exam weeks).

Emeritus Professor Irma M. Reiner has volunteered to tutor students who need help. She is an excellent teacher! Available:
