Text and Study Guide
"For All Practical Purposes: Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics", 7th ed., W.H. Freeman and Company, NY, NY, 2000, ISBN 0-7167-4783-9.

Course Description
Introduction to selected areas of mathematical sciences through application to modeling and solution of problems involving networks, circuits, trees, game theory, encoding, symmetry and tilings, and geometric growth. The material will be taken from units I through VI in the text.

Prerequisite
Three years of high school mathematics, including two years of algebra and one year of geometry.

Grading Policy
Your grade will be based on homework, quizzes, three hour exams and the final exam. Your work should be readable and organized. All work must be shown-a bare answer is not enough.
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 15%
Hour Exams 45%, (15% each)
Final Exam 30%

Quizzes
A short quiz will be given weekly- unless an exam is scheduled on that week. The lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester.

Homework
A number of problems will be assigned each week to be handed in. No late homework will be collected or graded. At the end of the semester the two lowest homework scores will be dropped.

The second quiz will cover sections 3.1 - 3.4 and will take place on Friday, April 4.
