Syllabus for Math 461, Section F13

Probability Theory

Text: Sheldon Ross, A First Course in Probability, 7th Edition, 2005, Prentice Hall.

Course topics: We will cover most of materials in the first eight chapters of the book.

Homework: Homework problems will be assigned daily. I will also post the assigned exercises on my home page. Homework problems will be collected weekly on Fridays in class and 4 or 5 randomly selected problems will be graded. Late homework will not be graded and credited. The two lowest scores on the homework assignments will be dropped.

Grading policy: There will be 2 in class tests and a final exam. The test and the final will be in our usual classroom. There is no makeup for the tests except for medical reasons in which case you have to provide medical documents. However, the makeup will generally be harder than the regular test. Each test accounts for 25% of the grade, the final accounts for 40% of the grade and the homework accounts for 10% of the grade.

  • Final exam: 1:30 pm--4:30 pm, Thursday, December 14.
  • Hourly exams: Friday, October 6, Friday, November 17. These exams will be given in class.
